CORSIA Methodology for Calculating Actual Life Cycle Emissions Values (Sixth Edition): – June 2025 Update

6th Edition Introduces Expanded GHG Reduction Framework

In June 2025, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) released the 6th edition of the CORSIA Methodology for Calculating Actual Life Cycle Emissions Values, marking a significant evolution in its approach to aviation fuel emissions accounting. This latest update strengthens the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) by introducing more comprehensive criteria for eligible fuels and emission reduction techniques.

Key additions include methodologies to account for greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions from Soil Carbon Accumulation (SCA) and Geological Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS). These updates reflect ICAO’s increased emphasis on capturing and validating upstream and downstream climate benefits of aviation fuel production.

Expanded Feedstock Specifications and Electricity Sourcing Rules

The methodology now encompasses new generic specifications for waste gases, residue gases, and by-product feedstocks. Additionally, it introduces detailed requirements for electricity sourcing in fuel production processes. Facilities must ensure temporal matching and additionality of renewable energy supply, enhancing the integrity of claimed emission reductions.

Strengthened Methodologies for Lower Carbon Aviation Fuels

The LCAF framework has been refined with updated transportation emission factors and clearer baseline carbon intensity values. Notably, the temporal limit for “low LUC risk practices” has been extended from 2030 to 2035, allowing continued benefit recognition for sustainable land use improvements.

Conclusion

This regulatory update by ICAO marks a pivotal enhancement in climate accountability for aviation fuels. It provides clear signals for the industry to accelerate adoption of rigorously certified low-emission technologies and feedstocks while ensuring lifecycle transparency and alignment with global decarbonization goals.
