CII DOCUMENT UPDATES: 2022 INTERIM GUIDELINES ON CORRECTION FACTORS AND VOYAGEAD JUSTMENTS FOR CII CALCULATIONS (CII GUIDELINES, G5)

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted Resolution MEPC.355(78), introducing Interim Guidelines on Correction Factors and Voyage Adjustments for Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) Calculations. These guidelines refine MARPOL Annex VI implementation, ensuring fairness in CII performance assessments.

Key Updates

Adjustments for Special Voyages

  • Ships can apply voyage adjustments when operating in ice conditions or facing exceptional safety concerns.
  • Fuel consumption during Ship-to-Ship (STS) transfers or shuttle tanker operations can be deducted under specific conditions.

Correction Factors for Energy Consumption

  • Adjustments are available for fuel used in electrical power generation, cargo heating, and discharge pumps.
  • Refrigerated container ships, LNG carriers, and tankers can apply specific correction factors.

Reporting and Compliance

  • Administrations and Recognized Organizations (ROs) will review and approve CII correction factor applications.
  • Ships must maintain detailed logs and report adjusted data to IMO’s Data Collection System (DCS).

Impact on the Maritime Industry

These refinements improve accuracy in emissions monitoring, supporting IMO’s goal of fair and transparent carbon intensity ratings.
