IMO DOCUMENT UPDATES: 2022 GUIDELINES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF THE IMO SHIP FUEL OIL CONSUMPTION DATABASE

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted Resolution MEPC.349(78), introducing the 2022 Guidelines for the Development and Management of the IMO Ship Fuel Oil Consumption Database. This update enhances transparency and ensures anonymized data collection for emissions monitoring.

Key Updates

Strengthened Data Collection and Anonymization

  • IMO numbers and ship flags will be removed from public data.
  • Ship specifications, such as gross tonnage (GT) and deadweight (DWT), will be rounded to prevent identification.

Enhanced Reporting Framework

  • Administrations will verify and submit fuel oil consumption data annually.
  • The IMO database will track missing data and notify authorities for corrections.

Annual Reporting to MEPC

  • The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) will receive yearly reports summarizing fuel consumption trends and carbon intensity developments.

Impact on the Maritime Industry

These updates support global carbon reduction strategies, ensuring standardized, secure, and accurate emissions tracking for international shipping.
