The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council has approved amendments to three pivotal documents under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). These include updates to the “CORSIA Methodology for Calculating Actual Life Cycle Emissions Values,” now in its fifth edition, introducing new sustainability certification schemes and approved feedstocks.
Key Updates:
- Feedstock Enhancements:
- New feedstocks such as wheat starch slurry and cobs are now classified as eligible residues.
- Expanded list includes non-standard coconuts, poultry fat, and mixed animal fats.
- Methodology Enhancements:
- Refined calculations for life cycle emissions, incorporating co-processed fuels and municipal solid waste (MSW).
- New provisions ensure accurate emissions reporting across the supply chain, including waste-to-energy credits.
- Sustainability Certification:
- Introduction of a new CORSIA-approved Sustainability Certification Scheme (SCS) to verify compliance with updated life cycle assessment (LCA) criteria.
- Enhanced certification to support low land-use change (LUC) risk practices and mitigate indirect land use change (ILUC).
These updates aim to strengthen CORSIA’s environmental integrity and support ICAO’s goal of reducing aviation’s carbon footprint through sustainable fuel pathways.
