The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted Resolution MEPC.336(76), establishing guidelines on Operational Carbon Intensity Indicators (CII). These guidelines support the implementation of MARPOL Annex VI regulations to reduce carbon emissions in international shipping.
Key Aspects of the Guidelines
Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) Framework
- Ships of 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) and above must calculate their attained annual operational CII.
- The CII rating system (A to E) determines compliance with carbon reduction targets.
Data Collection and Reporting
- Ships must report fuel consumption, distance travelled, and hours underway.
- Administrations will verify CII data and issue Statements of Compliance.
Performance Improvement Measures
- Ships rated D for three consecutive years or E for one year must submit a corrective action plan.
- Operators must optimize speed, route efficiency, and fuel management.
Impact on the Maritime Industry
The CII framework incentivizes lower emissions, ensuring progressive decarbonization in global shipping.
