What Has Changed and Why It Matters

On 12 February 2026, the European Commission released Version 2.2 of the ReFuelEU Aviation Fuel Monitoring Tool. While the update may seem incremental, it introduces practical refinements that enhance data accuracy, clarity, and overall compliance reliability.

Below is a focused comparison with Version 2.1, highlighting the most relevant differences.

Key Differences from Version 2.1

Clearer Treatment of Unique ID

In Version 2.2, the Instructions sheet explicitly clarifies that the Unique ID must be pasted into the Raw Input tab as text rather than numbers. This prevents formatting distortions that previously created avoidable validation issues.

In addition, the Previous Flight Unique ID field in the Raw Input tab is now automatically generated. In Version 2.1, this required more manual handling. The new automation reduces workload, although operators must still verify the accuracy of the linked flight data.

More Consistent Reporting Output

The AO Reporting Template has been adjusted so that Column H now returns zero instead of null values. Compared to Version 2.1, this improves consistency in reporting outputs and eliminates ambiguity during data submission and review.

Additional Traceability in Alternative Calculations

The Alternative Calculation sheet now includes an ICAO call sign column. This was not available in the previous version. The addition strengthens operational traceability and alignment between flight level data and compliance reporting.

Conclusion

Version 2.2 does not radically change the structure of the monitoring tool. Instead, it refines critical details that directly impact data quality and submission accuracy. Compared to Version 2.1, the update focuses on reducing manual errors, improving clarity, and enhancing traceability.

As regulatory monitoring frameworks become more detailed, early adaptation is essential. Organisations that proactively adjust internal data workflows and validation processes will not only ensure smoother compliance under ReFuelEU Aviation, but also strengthen their overall sustainability reporting strategy.
