The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted Resolution MEPC.388(81), amending the 2022 Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) Guidelines. These updates refine fuel consumption data collection methods and align with global efforts to reduce maritime emissions.
Key Amendments
New Consumer Type Definition
The updated guidelines introduce a “consumer type” category, encompassing engines, boilers, fuel cells, and other fuel-consuming equipment.
Enhanced Fuel Consumption Data Collection
- Expanded Monitoring Methods: Ships must measure fuel use via bunker delivery notes (BDNs), flow meters, or tank readings.
- LNG Fuel Adjustments: New calculation methods account for methane slip and nitrogen content in LNG-powered vessels.
Strengthened Reporting Requirements
- Distance and Hours Tracking: Ships must log distance travelled and time underway per IMO standards.
- Onshore Power Usage: Vessels must report electricity consumption from shore-based sources.
Impact on the Maritime Industry
These revisions improve data accuracy, regulatory compliance, and energy efficiency strategies, supporting IMO’s GHG reduction goals.
