CII DOCUMENT UPDATES: 2022 GUIDELINES ON OPERATIONAL CARBON INTENSITY INDICATORS AND THE CALCULATION METHODS (CII GUIDELINES, G1)

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted Resolution MEPC.352(78), issuing updated guidelines for Operational Carbon Intensity Indicators (CII) and Calculation Methods. These guidelines refine the implementation of MARPOL Annex VI, reinforcing global efforts to reduce shipping emissions.

Key Updates

Standardized CII Calculation

  • Ships of 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) and above must calculate their attained annual operational CII.
  • The formula considers fuel consumption, distance travelled, and transport work.

Compliance and Performance Ratings

  • Ships receive an A to E rating based on CII performance.
  • D-rated (three consecutive years) and E-rated ships must submit corrective action plans.

Alternative CII Metrics for Trial Use

  • Encourages Energy Efficiency Performance Indicators (EEPI), cbDIST, and clDIST as additional benchmarks.

Impact on the Maritime Industry

These refinements ensure greater accuracy in emissions tracking, helping ships align with IMO’s decarbonization targets and promote sustainable shipping practices.
