The European Commission has released an updated list of competent authorities across member states responsible for enforcing Regulation (EU) 2023/2405, commonly known as ReFuelEU Aviation. This regulation, which aims to promote sustainable air transport, mandates compliance in areas such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) usage, emissions monitoring, and airport operations.
The list, published by the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, identifies specific authorities in each member state overseeing three critical domains: aviation fuel suppliers, aircraft operators, and airport managing bodies. For instance, Austria’s Federal Ministry for Climate Action supervises all three sectors, while Bulgaria’s Directorate General Civil Aviation Administration handles similar responsibilities. However, some states, such as Belgium and Lithuania, are still finalizing their designated authorities for aviation fuel suppliers.
Highlighting a structured approach, the list ensures member states align their efforts with ReFuelEU’s sustainability objectives. Authorities like Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility demonstrate robust frameworks to ensure compliance. In cases where responsibilities remain pending, interim measures may apply to maintain regulatory adherence.
This document represents a pivotal step in the European Union’s pursuit of carbon neutrality in aviation. By fostering collaboration between regulators, fuel suppliers, and operators, the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation ensures that Europe stays at the forefront of sustainable aviation initiatives. Continuous updates to the list reflect the dynamic nature of regulatory enforcement, ensuring transparency and accountability for all stakeholders involved.
