The European Commission’s latest ReFuelEU Aviation SAF flexibility mechanism report outlines the progress and challenges in integrating sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across the EU. The flexibility mechanism, applicable from 2025 to 2034, allows aviation fuel suppliers to distribute SAF across Union airports based on a weighted average, ensuring a smooth transition toward higher blending requirements.
SAF is central to the EU’s climate goals, contributing significantly to the target of net-zero emissions by 2050. The report highlights growing SAF production capacity, regulatory incentives, and ongoing investments in biofuels and synthetic aviation fuels.
However, industry stakeholders remain concerned about pricing, traceability, and equitable distribution of SAF. While proposals for virtual SAF certificate trading have been suggested, questions persist regarding market transparency and compliance with existing regulations.
As SAF adoption scales up, improvements in supply chain infrastructure, digital reporting, and policy alignment will be essential to meet long-term sustainability targets.
